The above scripture says that we are not to return evil for evil or insult for insult. We have been called to pray and love those who persecute us or treat us bad. Yes, we are all guilty of this but perhaps some more than others. However, we must be conscious of our actions and words so we may crucify our flesh when such an occasion arise.
What are the benefits for not returning evil for evil but rather praying and loving them? So we may obtain a blessing, bringing welfare and happiness and protection!
If we return evil for evil and insult for insult, then we leave ourselves open for the attack of the enemy. Many Christians ask people to pray for them because they feel or are sensing the enemy is attacking. If we are not bringing welfare, happiness, and protection, then perhaps, we should be conscious of how we speak to others when they do not speak so kindly of us. When we pray for others who insult and attack us to be protected and to have God's light flood their hearts, then we ourselves will receive protection and happiness as His Light floods our hearts. Remember, it was after Job had prayed for his three friends when Job received his double blessing after he had lost everything.
Much of our blessing comes as we Love and pray for our enemies and those who persecute us. We are called to Love and be peacemakers. Yet out of so many Christians comes filth from their mouths as they slander secular leaders and others. I see so many Christians putting up insulting pictures and words of their president on Facebook whether it was Obama or Bush. Peter said honor the king. Peter was telling the brethren to pray for their leaders for if they insulted their king, they insulted God as it was He who allowed the king to be there. Did Jesus not tell Pilate his authority over HIM came from above? And we are wondering why even America is losing her protection?
It does not matter who is in office. If we do our part as Christians repenting and praying for our leaders, God will move the hearts of the leaders. But if you bicker over nonsense, then you take your own blessings away and are in sin.
Proverbs 21:1(AMP) The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as are the watercourses; He turns it whichever way He wills.
Ephesians 4:29-32 Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [EVER] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favor) to those who hear it.30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God [do not offend or vex or sadden Him], by Whom you were sealed (marked, branded as God’s own, secured) for the day of redemption (of final deliverance through Christ from evil and the consequences of sin).31 Let all bitterness and indignation and wrath (passion, rage, bad temper) and resentment (anger, animosity) and quarreling (brawling, clamor, contention) and slander (evil-speaking, abusive or blasphemous language) be banished from you, with all malice (spite, ill will, or baseness of any kind).32 And become useful and helpful and kind to one another, tenderhearted (compassionate, understanding, loving-hearted), forgiving one another [readily and freely], as God in Christ forgave you.
